NEW LAB DETECTS CANCER RISK IN HOMES
WARD HILL, MA, December 8, 2004: To better serve the local community and communities throughout the nation, AccuStar Labs, a subsidiary of Spruce Environmental Technologies, Inc., headquartered in Ward Hill, has announced the opening of its second full-service, certified radon test laboratory. Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini officiated at a ribbon cutting ceremony held on December 1 to celebrate the opening. AccuStar’s other radon test laboratory is located in Medway. A third location in Pennsylvania is planned for an early 2005 opening.
In a press release noting the laboratory’s opening, the Mayor’s office stated: “AccuStar Labs screens homes and offices for radon gas. Exposure to this gas is a leading cause of lung cancer, second only to cigarette smoking. The United States EPA estimates that 15,000-22,000 lung cancer deaths each year are caused by long-term exposure to radon. Homes built in areas rich in natural uranium deposits, such as Haverhill and all of Essex County, are prone to having dangerously high levels of the gas trapped inside. In fact, according to a study conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, 36 percent of Essex County homes tested for radon gas had unsafe radon levels above those levels established by the EPA as safe. Because you cannot see, smell, or taste radon gas, the only way to know if it is a problem in your home is to conduct a simple, 48-hour measurement provided by a certified radon test laboratory. AccuStar Labs will provide this service to Haverhill and the surrounding community from their new Ward Hill location.”
